Finding Performance Issues Early with JMeter

Performance issues can be difficult to resolve when found late in the software development lifecycle. Using an open-source tool like JMeter to develop, manage, and execute load and performance tests while the code is being developed, is an inexpensive way to help find performance issues. Executing these performance tests as part of your CI/CD pipeline enables users to find and resolve performance issues as soon as they are introduced. This hands-on workshop will help attendees develop a foundational understanding of JMeter, while engaging them in creating and running performance tests against a sample application. The workshop will cover an introduction to JMeter, picking test scenarios, basic test recording (over HTTP and HTTPS), parameterizing and seeding of tests, and executing performance tests within Jenkins as part of a CI/CD pipeline. This workshop is appropriate for software developers, software testers, test engineers, performance testers, performance engineers, test leads, and DevOps engineers.

NOTE: Attendees need to bring their laptop and should have a technical background. No prior knowledge of JMeter is assumed.

Bob Foster is a Technical Manager with over 20 years experience as a senior software engineer and team lead. Bob has proven experience in all aspects of software development and delivery (including DevOps, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code). He is a firm believer in the benefits gained by software teams when following Agile, CI/CD, and DevOps methodologies and has been successful in helping drive Agile/DevOps cultural shifts in both individual teams and organizations. Bob feels strongly that feedback is crucial to the success of a project and following the disciplines of Agile, CI/CD and DevOps will help provide visibility and feedback early and often throughout the entirety of a project, improving its chance for success.
