Automation Justification

To many people, DevOps is solely about automation. Automation is a huge part of the DevOps process, but there are many other aspects to consider. I’ll be talking about how and why DevOps is important to me, and how automation is a part of each of our DevOps steps. We’ll discuss how automation becomes important to each workday by streamlining tasks and leaving time for the more important (and fun) work. We’ll go over why we automate, what we automate, and how we automate. We will have examples of some of the many tools and processes to simplify automation while noting how important choice is in the process. We’ll also talk about some situations in which automation may not be the correct decision, as well as how to deal with folks who may have misgivings. In the end, we’ll realize that the correct combination of tools, code, and our own human creativity will make your work (and maybe personal) life run more smoothly.

Judy Johnson
Onyx Point

Judy Johnson has been a software engineer for over thirty-five years and has been at Onyx Point since 2015. She has also functioned as a System Engineer, Project Manager, ScrumMaster, and a record store clerk. She was lucky enough to have started programming in the 19XXes when her Dad brought home a PDP-8 - she eventually progressed from paper-tape and punched cards to “more modern” computing systems. When not at work, Judy can be found baking yummy treats for family, friends, and coworkers; attending hockey games and rock concerts (hopefully again soon); or trying to finish a good book. Judy also loves to volunteer, especially in events that promote diversity in technology. Proof of her dedication to this cause is the fact that both of her awesome daughters are engineers.
